Before & After

Have you noticed your needlepoint rug is starting to lose its square shape? Or, have you had it cleaned recently and it doesn’t look quite the same? Your rug is losing, or has lost, what is known as its “blocking” and “sizing”.

When a needlepoint rug is crafted, the finished piece is a parallelogram shape (bottom left). The rug is then blocked and sized to a rectangular shape (bottom right). Over time, most needlepoint rugs will seek their normal bias. When they are exposed to moisture (such as washing), they revert to their pre-blocking shape.
